Scholarships - How do I Apply?

For the school period 2011-2013 the Committee of the Swiss Association for the United Word Colleges accepts applications from students born either in 1994 or 1995. The selected students will start in September 2011, with long winter and summer holidays. The application, with a handwritten letter, must be sent to Mr. Jürgen Capitain, Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich, Sihlhof LAA 214, Lagerstr. 5, CH-8090 Zürich In his/her letter, the applicant needs to state his/her personal reasons for applying (Why do I wish to attend an international college? What are my expectations of such a school? In what way can I contribute to the school?). Enclosures:
  • Curriculum vitae with passport photograph and personal coordinates (name, surname, nationality, telephone number, e-mail address, etc.)
  • A copy of the identity card or passport
  • Written recommendation from a teacher
  • Written recommendation from an unrelated person
  • Copies of school reports from the last two years

Selection procedure:
  1. Application deadline: 29 October 2010 (date of postmark). The selection committee proceeds to a first selection on the basis of the written applications.
  2. Entrance exam: the short-listed candidates are invited to an entrance exam, which takes place in Zurich in the second half of November 2010. This exam consists of an essay and a half hour interview with the selection committee. The essay must be written in a Swiss national language or in English within 90minutes. The topic is usually quite general and relates to the UWC-schools ethics.
  3. Selection: by the end of December, the Committee of the Swiss Association proceeds to the definitive selection of candidates on the basis of the recommendations made by the selection committee. The candidates are then notified and registered with their respective colleges.
  4. Start of Term: September 2011.

The number of candidates selected depends on the scholarships available to pay for tuition and boarding fees. Upon selection, parents are invited to make donations, which will finance future candidates. Travel costs and pocket money are generally provided by the parents.
